Nearly Half of U.S. Teens Smoke, Drink Alcohol, or Use Drugs

Nearly Half of U.S. Teens Smoke, Drink Alcohol, or Use Drugs
Bookmark and Share

Teen drug and alcohol abuse may be a bigger problem than anyone could have thought. It is generally an accepted fact that teens will experiment, more likely than not, before they leave high school. A new report has determined that nearly half of all American high school students smoke, drink alcohol, or use illicit drugs; one in four who started using these substances before they turn 18 may become addicts. The new report by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University in New York City, concluded that one-quarter of people in the U.S. who start using drugs or alcohol before age 18 meet the criteria for drug or alcohol addiction, compared with one of 25 Americans who started using drugs or alcohol when they were 21 or older.

According to information cited in the new report:
  • Ten million or 75% of high school students have tried tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, or cocaine; and one in five of them meet the medical criteria for addiction.
  • Of the 6.1 million or 46% of high school students who currently use addictive substances, one in three is addicted to these substances.
  • The most common drug of choice among high school students in the U.S. is alcohol, followed by cigarettes and marijuana.

The data collected is based on surveys of:
  • 1,000 high school students
  • 1,000 parents of high school students
  • 500 school officers
  • expert interviews
  • focus groups
  • a literature review of 2,000 scientific articles and an analysis of seven data sets

“I was surprised at the prevalence of substance use disorders among young people,” says study author Susan E. Foster, CASA’s vice president and director of policy research and analysis. The new study opens a window of opportunity for providers and parents to intervene and prevent addiction, she says.

“Do everything you can to get young people through their teen years without using drugs or alcohol,” she says. “Every year they don’t use drugs or alcohol reduces their risk of negative consequences, such as addiction.”

Amy Winehouse Passes On

July 26, 2011
Today, singer and songwriter, Amy Winehouse was laid to rest and for many, it is a sad day for people around the world. When someone famous passes on due to the harm caused by years of addiction, we usually talk about the circumstances of her death, we talk about what could have been done differently, and furthermore what you (the reader) can do to help someone caught in the death grip of addiction. Amy Winehouse is not too dissimilar from Hendrix, Joplin, and the likes; she suffered from the same heartbreaking disease as millions across the globe. However, not everyone had the resources for help that Winehouse had, let alone the financial ability to seek help from the greatest experts - yet none of that made any difference. That is the irony of this type of disease; you can have it all while having absolutely nothing.

I have heard many people say in response to hearing of her death, “Big Surprise” or “It’s about time”. As cold as those words are to utter, let alone hear, that happens to be the sentiment of a lot of people. People who believe that in some way this was what Winehouse was looking for, or that because she had unlimited resources that she had no excuse for succumbing to such a common disease. Sadly, to the dismay of many, sometimes death happens, there is no formula to success and even people with the strongest recovery can fall back down into the darkness of addiction.

It seems that with the disintegration of the stigma associated with addiction, people sometimes believe that it is not that big of a deal and the problem can be easily rendered with a little treatment and twelve steps. We all wish it were that easy, but the reality is that there is a lot more to a successful program of recovery than that. For each individual what “that” is is always a little bit different. For some it is love, and others God, some even look to the nature surrounding them for strength in battling the disease. What I am saying is that we cannot do this alone; everyone needs somebody to lean on from time to time. Our heart goes out to Amy’s family as they sit shiva.

I wish to leave you with the wise words of Rabbi Shais Taub:

“King Solomon said, "The living shall take it to heart." There is a lesson to be learned from every death. To anybody out there going through the living hell of active addiction -- whether you yourself are an addict or you are someone who loves an addict -- here is my message to you. Please know that it's not that you haven't tried everything there is to try. It's not that you're not good enough, strong enough, smart enough, determined enough. You could multiply your efforts and your will power by literally a million times, you could have the whole world on your side, and still face the same heartbreaking outcome in the end. But there is hope. Let Amy's example not be in vain. There is a Power greater than all of us. May all those who seek in truth find that Power now.”

Methamphetamine May Have Long Lasting Side Effects

Methamphetamine May Have Long Lasting Side Effects
Methamphetamine, arguably the worst drug ever created by man, may have long lasting side effects that no one could have ever imagined. Meth abuse is still a relatively new problem in the timeline of addiction history, clearly as more research is conducted on the drug the more horrors are coming to the surface regarding the long term effects associated with the drug. This epidemic has sparked a worldwide campaign to understand and rid the world of the terrors this drug unleashes on entire communities. New research suggests that methamphetamine and stimulants like it may cause Parkinson’s disease.

Three groups were researched by scientists conducting the study.
40,000 people hospitalized because of abuse of methamphetamines or amphetamines
207,000 people not addicted to drugs who were admitted to the hospital for appendicitis
35,000 people admitted for cocaine-use disorders

Patients with methamphetamine or amphetamine-use disorders were found to be 76 percent more likely than the other two groups for developing Parkinson’s disease, HealthDay reports.
21 out of 10,000 people with methamphetamine or amphetamine dependence develop Parkinson’s over 10 years
12 out of 10,000 people without this drug dependence

“This study provides evidence of this association for the first time, even though it has been suspected for 30 years, according to lead researcher Dr. Russell Callaghan from the Center for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. Dr. Callaghan said that Parkinson’s disease is a result of low levels of the chemical dopamine in the brain; animal studies have shown researchers that methamphetamine damages the brain’s dopamine-producing regions.

The study pointed out that people using ADHD medication as prescribed may not fall into the same category due to the fact that the dose they are taking is minimal.

The study appears in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

"Brianna's Law" Petition -please read! very important! Click on link to read story

This child abuse story is about a 5-month-old little girl named Brianna Lopez. On July 19, 2002 Baby Brianna passed away. Her father and uncle would toss her in the air and not catch her. They sexually assaulted her. Her uncle raped her. They bit her. Her mother threw her, bit her and pinched her. She was bruised and beaten. Her grandmother and another uncle knew about the abuse but didn't do anything. Brianna also had several broken bones. She had bleeding from the brain, broken ribs, bucket handle fractures, all signs of shaken baby syndrome. They beat and raped her time and time again. Her mother "fell asleep" while they killed Brianna. Brianna was beaten and bruised from head to toe and nobody could help her. That baby did nothing to deserve that. This should happen to no child.
