YORK, Pa. -- They had no birth certificates, schooling, immunizations or evidence of medical care -- nothing whatsoever to prove their existence.

Police in the south-central Pennsylvania city of York are still piecing together how and why the parents of five children concealed them for so many years inside a squalid row house with no heat, electricity or running water.

Authorities have charged 33-year-old Louann Bowers and 45-year-old Sinhue Johnson with five felony counts of child endangerment. The children ranged in age from 2 to 13 when they were found by authorities.

Their parents are scheduled to be in court Friday, but Bowers' lawyer says she will waive her right to an arraignment.

Attorney Ronald Gross says Bowers ran away from a troubled household when she was 16 and "didn't want to be found."
