To Give or Not to Give: Watch Facebook Causes!

Should the Facebook public be more aware of who is asking for your money?

The Facebook  Cause page allows the administrator to collect funds which are filtered through the Network for Good, who “has exclusive legal control over the donation.”

Recently, it was found that a particular organization was the beneficiary of four separate cause pages, and on each one the organization’s non profit status was listed along with their EIN number and website address.  After going to the website listed, there was a statement that this organization had dissolved and their non profit status was defunct.  So how did the administrators of four separate causes get this information and why were they using it to collect donations…..scam, maybe?

The lesson learned is that, before you give your money or support to any charitable organization, take a few minutes to check them out, ask a friend, or a trusted business person to help you, if you need it.   By doing a little legwork you can feel good about your donation and know that your money is being given to the legitimate cause for which it was intended.
